Filing an auto claim FAQ
It's up to you. If you were in an accident, you should report it to us. You can then choose to file a claim through USAA, the other driver's insurance company or not at all.
We recommend you file a claim if:
- Someone got hurt in the accident.
- You cause damage to someone else's vehicle or property.
- You cause damage to city property, such as a guardrail, telephone pole or street sign.
You may not want to file a claim if:
- You cause minimal damage to your own vehicle or property, and the damage is less than your deductible.
- You don't plan on fixing your vehicle.
We recommend you file a claim with us if:
- You want to use a USAA-preferred shop.
- You're willing to pay your deductible up front. If an investigation finds you're not at fault, we'll refund it.
- You want to get an estimate to help you decide if you want to proceed with the claim.
We recommend you report the incident to USAA, but don't file a claim if:
- You want to pay for the repairs on your own.
- You don't want to fix your vehicle, and it's not owned by any other party, lease or finance company.
We recommend you file a claim with the other driver's insurance if:
- You're not at fault, don't want to pay your deductible and want to have the other company pay for repairs.
- You're not at fault and need the other company to provide a rental car.
- You're sure the other insurance company or person will accept full responsibility.
