What our homeowners policies typically cover

  • Damage to Your Home

    • Your policy may cover exterior damage including roof, windows and other structures on your property.
    • It may help cover interior damage to floors, walls and more.
  • Dry Out and Clean Up

    • Your policy may help cover the cost of cleaning up or drying out water.
    • It may help cover the cost to remove debris or any objects that can't be repaired.
  • Personal Belongings

    • Your policy may cover damage to furniture, jewelry, electronics and more.
    • Theft and vandalism may be covered.
  • Additional Living Expenses

    • If you're unable to live in your home during cleanup or repairs, you may be reimbursed for things like food and temporary lodging.
  • Spoiled Food

    • Your policy may cover refrigerated food that has spoiled due to a power outage or other incident.

How deductibles work

A deductible is what's subtracted from your claim's total payment amount. For example, if you have a $1,000 deductible and $2,500 in covered damage to your home and belongings, you'd pay the first $1,000. We'll cover the rest.

How the claims process works

Step 1 Tell us what happened.

Provide details and upload photos online or on our app.

Step 2 We'll evaluate the loss.

We'll review what happened and the costs involved.

Step 3 We'll send the payment.

We'll pay for the covered loss minus your policy's deductible.

Step 4 Repair or replace items.

We may recommend a contractor, or you can choose your own.

When you should file a homeowners claim

  • If the cost of the damage to your property is more than your deductible
  • If living in your home is a health or safety risk
  • If you caused damages to someone else's property

Regardless, you should always notify USAA if your home is damaged.
