Who should I notify of my move?

What do I do if my personal property is lost or damaged while being shipped?

Work with either the shipping organization or your homeowners insurance company to determine if you experienced a covered loss. Once coverage is established, you will likely be asked to provide pictures, receipts or other items that can help determine what benefits may apply. Every moving situation is unique. Prior to your move, contact your insurance providers to better understand what coverage limitations may apply.

Does moving out of the country affect my homeowners insurance?

Yes, because homeowners insurance covers more than your house and other structures. It also protects your belongings. But an international move can affect your homeowners coverage in different ways, depending on what you're going to do with the house.

If you're selling it and transporting your belongings, contact your insurance provider to determine what coverage will protect your belongings. If you plan to rent a home in your new location, a renters policy may be a good solution. Some policies offer worldwide protection and coverage for items kept in storage.

If you're keeping it and renting it out to someone, you'll want to switch over to a landlord insurance policy and get a separate renters insurance policy for the belongings you're storing or taking with you.

If you're shipping your belongings, work with the freight or moving company to learn what options they offer for losses that happen during transit.

What information should the moving company give me during my move?

Any time another person or agency takes possession of your property, there should be a paper trail. You may get:

A contract that details what you're hiring the company to do, costs and expected services.
A shipping manifest that lists the property they've taken into their possession.
An estimate of the total value of property or a limit of liability statement. For example, you may have $100,000 of personal property, but the shipping company only provides liability for $25,000.
Documentation of any insurance you may have purchased as part of your agreement.
A bill of landing or freight bill that lists the weight of your property and freight costs. You should get one of these at the start of your move and again when your property is unloaded.
