What’s the good student discount?

It’s a discount that gives eligible drivers up to 10% off their car insurance.

The discount only applies to certain types of car insurance coverage. In most states, this includes a discount on bodily injury, property damage, medical payments, personal injury protection, and comprehensive and collision coverage.

The Good Student Discount isn't available in Hawaii or North Carolina.

How do I qualify?

In most states, the driver must be under 25 years old and a full-time student in high school, college, or vocational or technical school.

They’ll also need to meet one of these grade standards:

  • Rank in the top 20% of the class
  • Letter grade average of B or better
  • Grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Dean's list, honor roll or a comparable standing

Good Student Discount FAQ

It depends on where you live. Most states will require proof or a completed application saying the student qualifies for the discount.

The requirements are the same if you're a military student. You may be able to get the Good Student Discount if you're under 25, attending school full time or live in a college dorm, and you meet at least one of the grade standards.

A full-time homeschool student may qualify if they meet one of these standards:

  • Score in the top 20% on a national exam that shows grade level and curriculum tested. This exam must be administered in a controlled setting by state or national education authorities.
  • Have a letter grade average of B or higher on a report card issued by the associated public school or certified teacher.

Because young drivers have less experience on the road and are at higher risk for accidents, they may have higher premiums. There are also other reasons your car insurance premium could go up.
