What a USAA Youth Spending account offers

It can help you teach your kid or teen how to spend their money and balance a budget — all in a secure environment. Plus, you earn interest based on our current rates. USAA members can open one for as little as $25.

No monthly service fee

Teaching financial responsibility shouldn't come at a cost.

Debit card and ATM access

Kids can make purchases, add money to their debit card and digital wallet, and access more than 100,000 preferred AutomatedTellerMachines.‍ ‍ See note 1

No overdraft fees

Your child can't spend more than they have in their account. So you never have to worry about them racking up overdraft fees.

Account features to help keep them on track

Parental controls

Check their account balance, set limits and transfer money.

Account alerts

Get notified if the account has a low balance or your child makes a large withdrawal.‍ ‍ See note 2

Limits for online services

When your child turns 13, choose which account services they can use on usaa.com and the USAA Mobile App.‍ ‍ See note 3

Easy ways to add money

Whether you're at home or on the go, you can easily add money to your child's USAA Youth Spending account.

  • Transfer money directly.
  • Set up direct deposit.
  • Use the Deposit@Mobile® feature of the USAA Mobile App.‍ ‍ See note 4
  • Try other deposit options.

Pair their checking account with a youth savings account.

While your child learns good spending habits, they could also be putting away money for the future.

Using both accounts can help your child manage money and create an emergency fund.

Youth checking account FAQ

This account is for kids younger than 18. To open it for them, you have to be their parent or legal guardian.

From your USAA profile, you can block the card. When your child finds their misplaced card, you can then unblock it.

If they can't find their card, you can report it online as lost or stolen.

If there are unauthorized charges, the adult who's on the account needs to call us at 210-531-USAA (8722). You won't be responsible for unauthorized debit card charges that you report to us.‍ ‍ See note 5

We’ll convert a USAA Youth Spending account to a USAA Classic Checking account right after a child turns 18.

The Standard Overdraft setting is then automatically applied and can result in fees. See the Overdraft Policy in the Depository Agreement and Disclosures for details.

If you stay on as a joint account holder, you can continue monitoring their account and help with bills or transfers.

If you haven’t sent us any proof of identification since you opened the account, you’ll need to upload images of their:

  • Social Security card.
  • Government-issued ID.
  • Proof of physical address.

You can submit these to our document portal.

To comply with the USA PATRIOT Act, USAA Federal Savings Bank must verify the ID of all account holders. If we don’t receive this proof within 55 days after your child turns 18, the account will be at risk of closing.
