Michigan car insurance coverage requirements

As of Jan. 1, 2024, Michigan law requires drivers to have at least the following minimum bodily injury and property damage liability limits:

  • $50,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person

This helps cover expenses for the injuries or deaths of others involved in accidents where you're found at fault.

  • $100,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident limit

This is the total amount of coverage for expenses related to the injuries or deaths of others involved in accidents where you're found at fault.

  • $10,000 of property damage liability coverage

This helps pay for damages to other people's property like vehicles, homes and other buildings if you're at fault for an accident.

Some drivers choose to have higher limits and carry additional coverages for more protection. If you're responsible for injuries and damage totaling more than your policy limits, you may have to pay out of pocket.

A popular coverage option is roadside assistance,2 which can help if you're broken down and need a tow. Many drivers also add rental reimbursement,3 which helps covers the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is in the shop for repairs after a covered loss.

If you're making payments to a leasing company or a lender, they may also require you to carry collision coverage and comprehensive coverage.

Michigan personal injury protection options

Michigan requires policyholder to have no-fault insurance as part of their policy. No-fault coverage includes personal injury protection (PIP) medical coverage. Depending on when your policy was put in place, or renews, recent reforms allow Michigan drivers to choose their PIP medical coverage. Previously, unlimited PIP coverage was required for all drivers. As of July 2, 2020, Michigan drivers can choose from six different PIP options.

Under these limits, this amount is the most your auto insurance company will pay per person, per accident for an injured person's expenses under PIP medical coverage.

  • Option 1: Unlimited coverage.
  • Option 2: Up to $500,000 in coverage.
  • Option 3: Up to $250,000 in coverage.
  • Option 4: Up to $250,000 in coverage with PIP medical exclusions. This option is available for drivers with non-Medicare health coverage that covers auto accident injuries and for household members if they have health insurance that will cover auto accident injuries.
  • Option 5: Up to $50,000 in coverage. This option is only available if the driver has Medicaid coverage and their spouse as well as any relatives living with them are either also enrolled in Medicaid, have qualified health coverage, or are covered by a different auto policy with PIP medical coverage.
  • Option 6: PIP medical opt-out. Available if the driver has Medicare (Parts A and B). Any of their household members must have another auto insurance policy or health insurance that will cover auto accident injuries.
