The benefits of a Valuable Personal Property policy: Elapsed time 0 seconds [00:00]
You probably have a lot of things that are important to you. Homeowners and renters insurance policies offer some protection for personal belongings. But the coverage those policies offer will only take you so far.
That's where valuable personal property, or VPP, kicks in.
Let's say your engagement ring slipped off your finger and into a lake. Or what if you accidentally cracked the face of your expensive watch on the kitchen counter? Homeowners and renters policies typically don't cover those situations, leaving you on the hook for repairing or replacing those items.
Here's the bottom line: The right personal property insurance helps protect your valuables beyond standard homeowners and renters policies.
Breakage and spillage coverage: Elapsed time 40 seconds [00:40]
A unique benefit of Valuable Personal Property insurance from USAA is its breakage and loss coverage.
So, if you lose or break valuable things like jewelry, cameras, musical instruments or firearms, you can have extended coverage.
The policy even offers spillage coverage. So, if you spill a glass of red wine on your fur coat and ruin it, you've got coverage. That can mean having more peace of mind when the unexpected happens.
Of course, it's good to be familiar with the details of your policies. Some of your valuables may not have coverage under personal property protection. Typically, things like collectibles, TVs and computers require specialized coverage under another policy.
You can get a Valuable Personal Property policy from USAA for as little as $2 a month. Plus, you don't need to have another USAA policy to get it!
That sounds like coverage that's worth a closer look. Get a quote today.

Tech coverage is different than VPP.
VPP doesn’t cover electronic devices. Tech coverage can help protect things like TVs, gaming consoles and drones from drops, spills and other accidents. See note 6
Valuable Personal Property insurance FAQ
Personal property items are covered by most typical homeowners and renters policies. But keep in mind these policies:
- May not cover the full value of more expensive items like jewelry, guns, artwork and silverware.
- Have a deductible when filing a claim.
- Don’t cover lost or accidentally damaged items.
- May increase in cost after filing a claim.
With VPP, you can get extra coverage for special items, including the expensive ones. And you won’t pay a deductible if you file a claim.
Yes. VPP covers this gap for you. Auto policies usually offer limited coverage for things stolen from your car.
In general, you need to describe the item with enough details so we can find a replacement. You’ll also need to select a coverage limit for the item. Later, if there’s a loss, you’ll need to provide proof of ownership and value.
You may also need to provide an appraisal for certain items before adding them to your policy. When you ask for a quote, check if your item needs one. You can upload appraisals, item descriptions, photos and receipts on usaa.com.
Replacement cost coverage means you can repair or replace your stolen or damaged property with items similar in quality and worth.
The amount we pay is determined at the time of the claim, up to your policy's limit. Some exceptions or conditions may apply. Refer to your policy for details.
