How does condo insurance work with a condo association policy?
The two policies work together. Your condo association's master insurance policy typically covers damage to some parts of the building. Our coverage can help cover your stuff and provide liability coverage.See note1 Where your master policy comes up short, you'll get added financial protection with condo insurance.
Coverage to help protect your propertySee note1
When you have your own policy, you've got protection beyond coverage for your condo's structure.
-
Personal Property
This includes the stuff you own like your furniture, jewelry, clothing, appliances and electronics. Even when you travel or put things in storage, your stuff is covered. If you want extra protection for specific valuables, think about adding Valuable Personal Property insurance.
-
Custom Features
You may have spent a lot to make your condo feel like home. If you have custom or upgraded features like flooring, plumbing, cabinets and countertops, they're covered, too.
-
Home SharingSee note2
Coverage for the things you own can extend to home sharing, exchange programs and short-term rentals. If you rent your condo to long-term tenants, you may need rental property insurance, also known as landlord insurance.
Coverage to help protect your financesSee note1
In addition to helping protect your belongings, condo coverage helps protect you financially if you face a lawsuit or other unexpected expenses following a covered loss.
-
Personal Liability
If you're at fault for someone's injury or damage to their property, condo coverage may protect you and cover your legal costs. To help cover costs after you reach your condo policy limit, consider umbrella insurance.
-
Medical Payments to Others
Costs for things like X-rays or ER visits for people injured on your property can add up. This helps cover their injuries no matter who's at fault, as well as anyone you accidentally may injure while you're away from your property.
-
Loss of Use
If a covered event leaves your home unlivable, this helps pay costs above and beyond your normal living expenses. It includes costs for things like hotel stays or apartment rent, food, laundry, moving, and pet boarding. Learn more about loss of use coverage.
-
Loss Assessment
Since the cost to repair damage to common areas is shared by all condo unit owners, this coverage could help pay unexpected condo association assessments.
-
Identity TheftSee note3
Our standard policy includes up to $5,000 of Identity Theft coverage, which can help pay for services you may need to recover your identity. For even more protection, you can go through the USAA Insurance Agency to get personal cyber insurance.
Replacement cost coverage
Your policy covers your belongings at current value with no depreciation.See note4 That means, if your stuff gets damaged in a covered event, we'll pay the cost to repair it, or we may replace it with a new item valued up to your policy limits. You just pay your deductible.
Special coverage for military
Active-duty and active reserve members can save with military-specific coverage. You won't pay a deductible on a covered loss for personally owned military gear and clothing. This can include uniforms, insignia, flight cases, headsets and body armor.See note5
Optional coverages to considerSee note1
-
Electronics
Our electronics coverage offers more protection than the standard policy for personal desktop and laptop computers, tablets, small drones, cell phones, wearable tech, gaming systems, TVs, and more. Learn more about our USAA Technology Coverage Endorsement.
-
Water Backup
This covers damage caused by water or sewage that backs up through the plumbing from outside the unit. It also covers damage from water that overflows from a sump pump or sump well designed to drain water from the interior foundation.
-
Earthquake
This provides coverage for your home and its contents if they're damaged by an earthquake, shock waves or tremors.See note6
-
Personal Injury
If you're accused of damaging someone's reputation with libel, slander, defamation of character or other harmful actions, personal injury protection can help. To add this coverage call us.
