USAA Savings Accounts

The minimum opening deposit is $25 for a USAA Savings account and $10,000 for a USAA Performance First Savings account. You can use:

• An existing USAA Bank account.
• Any USAA credit card.
• A Mastercard or Visa from another bank.
• An account at another bank that you've previously used for transfers.

Although there are no monthly service fees or minimum balance requirements, savings account debit transactions are limited to six per month. Exceeding limits can result in fees and/or conversion of your savings account to a checking account.

Here are some of the more common savings account transactions that count toward your six-transaction limit for each monthly statement cycle:

• Money sent between USAA accounts, including overdraft protection
• Money sent to an account at another bank
• Bill payments
• Checks

Absolutely. Many people like to open separate accounts for specific savings goals, like unexpected expenses, holiday shopping or a vacation. You can open an account for each — and nickname them to match your goal. To learn more about savings goals, log on, go to "My Tools" and select "Goals."

You can open a joint account with anyone, including children or grandchildren. You'll need their contact information, date of birth and Social Security number. For more information, visit our Youth Savings page.

To add a joint account holder you'll need their address, date of birth and Social Security number. On the page where you view your transactions, select "Account Details" and then "Add an Account Holder."

No. But your savings account does come with a free ATM card, which lets you get cash from ATMs. It cannot be used for purchases at stores or online.

If you need a debit card, apply for a free checking account along with your savings account. For added convenience, we can tie both your checking and savings account to the same debit card.

There are several ways to make a deposit:

• Transfer money electronically from your USAA account or from another bank.
• Snap a picture of a check using our free Deposit@Mobile feature in the USAA Mobile App.^{See note2}
• Deposit cash or checks at select USAA ATMs.
• Drop your deposit in the mail using our free, postage-paid envelopes. We'll credit your account the day we receive the funds.
• Set up direct deposit.

There's no charge for making a deposit.
