What’s a child rider?

A child rider provides term life insurance as your children grow. You can include it with a new policy or your current one.

One rider covers all eligible children. Before it expires, you have the option to convert it. This means changing it to a permanent policy so they're always covered.

Who can I cover?

You can cover your biological children, stepchildren and legally adopted children. They must be at least 14 days old but less than 18 years old to be eligible.

How long does it last?

The coverage expires when your child turns 26 or you turn 71, depending on your policy. You can convert it to keep the coverage.

Will they need a medical exam?

No, but we may ask you some health-related questions. Certain conditions or risky hobbies could affect eligibility, but once approved, your child is guaranteed coverage later in life.

Lifelong protection that grows with your child.

Individual whole life policies are based on age, so life insurance costs more as you get older.

Having and converting a child rider may cost less than waiting until adulthood to get an individual policy.

  • You can choose $10,000 to $25,000 per parent, up to $50,000 combined. Later, you can turn each one into a separate policy.
  • It's an affordable way to insure your kids without buying separate policies. You'll just pay the cost alongside your regular premium.

Child Rider FAQ

Adding a rider is generally easier and more affordable than buying a stand-alone policy for a child.

Plus, it guarantees their future insurability. Even if their health changes later in life, they can still get coverage.

Usually, no. However, if you're the legal guardian of your grandchild, you can add them to your policy.

Otherwise, grandparents can purchase a separate life insurance policy for a grandchild.

You can transfer your converted policy to the insured adult child by completing a Transfer of Ownership form.
