What’s typically covered by roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance can help if your car breaks down. If you’re not sure about your coverage, you can check your policy. Here are some common things we can help with.

Towing or stuck

If you have car trouble, get it towed to a nearby repair shop. Or get your car pulled out if you’re stuck in a ditch, mud or snow.

Dead battery

Get a jump-start if your car won’t start.

Flat tire

If you have a spare tire, we can replace the flat. If the spare is also flat, we’ll schedule a tow.

Lockout

Get an expert to unlock your car if you’re locked out.

Fuel delivery

We’ll deliver gas if you run out. You’ll just need to pay the fuel cost.

How roadside assistance works

File a roadside claim in just a few minutes and get back on track.

Steps to complete How roadside assistance works

  1. Ask for help

Tell us what happened. Get started on usaa.com or the USAA Mobile App. We’ll contact our service provider right away.

  2. Get help

How soon they arrive will depend on services you need and your location. You'll need to wait with your car. If you leave, the only service we can provide is towing.

  3. Get back on the road

A technician will help diagnose and fix the problem. It usually takes less than an hour for them to service your car. If the car needs more work, they’ll set up a tow.

When you're stranded, help can't come quickly enough. If you find yourself in that situation, USAA is here and ready to get someone out to you. First, make sure you're in a safe place. Call 911 for emergencies. Then, answer this question.

Do you have a mechanical breakdown, or have you been in an accident? This is the key to getting the help you need.

Roadside assistance: Elapsed time 29 seconds [00:29]

If your car broke down, our 24-hour roadside assistance is your go-to. It's optional coverage on your auto policy.

It can help if you have a flat tire, run out of gas, need a jumpstart, lock your keys in your car and more. With a few taps in the USAA Mobile App, we'll send a service provider your way, getting you back on the road as soon as possible.

But let's say you don't have a spare tire or it's more than just a dead battery. Roadside assistance covers one tow to the nearest repair shop or a shop you choose. If your preferred shop is further than the distance listed in your policy, you may have to pay for the extra mileage out of pocket.

Report a claim: Elapsed time 1 minutes 10 seconds [01:10]

Now, let's talk about accidents. If you hit an object or another vehicle and can't drive your car, getting towed isn't covered by roadside assistance. Instead, an auto insurance claim can help provide a collision tow.

To start the claims process, you'll need to call USAA. We'll connect you to an insurance adjuster and verify your coverage, then send a tow truck to your location.

They'll also be there for you through every step of the claims process.
