Protect your home from wildfires.

Get tips on how to help prepare your home to withstand embers and wildfire damage.

Steps to protect your home from wildfires

Research from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, or IBHS, shows you can help make your home more resistant to wildfires by following these steps.

Watch for embers.

Embers can enter your home through attic vents and crawlspaces. Installing screens yourself or with a hired specialist can help keep them out.

Damage can also be caused by embers landing on a wooden roof. Think about upgrading to shingles with a high rating for fire-resistance. These are made with special materials to protect your roof from falling embers.

Maintain your deck.

Windblown embers also pose a threat to attached decks. To help minimize your risks, don't store anything on or below your deck that might easily catch fire.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your deck, consider making the space between boards at least a quarter inch to reduce fire spread.

IBHS has a guide that shows other ways to help protect your home and family from future wildfires.

Get more protection with the USAA Wildfire Response Program.

This program can help qualifying members reduce the risk of losing their home to an active wildfire. Our providers monitor for threats and send certified firefighters to help prevent losses.

If you have an active rental property or homeowners insurance policy with us and live in a designated at-risk area, we’ll automatically enroll you.

Property damage assessment

Your enrollment authorizes wildland firefighters to respond quickly, assess possible damage and fight a wildfire on your property.

There's no guarantee a crew can prevent damage or respond to all wildfires or member properties.

No additional cost

We’ll add this complimentary service automatically to eligible policies. It’ll continue as long as your policy remains active.

Communication

Wildfire professionals will monitor fire activity before, during and after the event to help reduce your risk of loss.

If they access your property during a wildfire, they’ll leave a notice to let you know they’ve been there.
