Learn when and how to file a dispute if you find errors on your report for your USAA accounts or loans.

Need to dispute a credit or debit card transaction?

To dispute a credit card transaction or an unauthorized charge due to a lost or stolen card, go to your transaction history, open the transaction details for the charge you want to dispute and select “Dispute Transaction.”

To dispute a debit card transaction, call us at 210-531-USAA (8722).

When to file an FCRA consumer report dispute

You should file a dispute if you think there's an error on your Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA, consumer report.

You can file a dispute 2 ways:

  • Through any of the consumer reporting agencies we use
  • Directly through us

What kind of things can I dispute?

You can dispute several things on your consumer report, including but not limited to:

  • Accounts you don't recognize or control.
  • Balances that were paid or settled in full.
  • Payments incorrectly counted as late.

How to file a dispute through a consumer reporting agency

You can file a dispute by calling any of the consumer reporting agencies we report to

  • Equifax: 888-378-4329
  • Experian®: 855-414-6048
  • Innovis: 866-712-0021
  • TransUnion: 800-916-880

After the agency looks into your dispute, they'll tell you what they found.

How to file a dispute through USAA

On usaa.com

To submit a digital dispute on usaa.com:

  • Go to Consumer Report Dispute Request.
  • Log on and follow the prompts to submit your dispute.

On the USAA Mobile App

To submit a digital dispute on the USAA Mobile App:

  • After logging on, tap “Chat.”
  • In the “Enter message here” field, type “consumer report dispute.”
  • Tap “File a dispute.”
  • Follow the prompts to submit your dispute.

With a dispute request form

Download and complete the Consumer Report Dispute Form.

Then upload it on usaa.com or our mobile app, or print and mail it to:

What to include with your consumer report dispute

To help us resolve your dispute as quickly as possible, complete the dispute form and provide any relevant information like:

  • A copy of the relevant portion of your consumer report.

  • Court orders.

  • Fraud affidavits.

  • Account statements.

  • Police reports.

  • Canceled checks.

How to send us your dispute form and supporting documents

We won't return any of the documents you send us. Send a copy and keep the original for your records.

To keep your accounts secure, don't include your full credit card number on any of the documents you send.

On usaa.com

To upload your dispute form and documents on usaa.com, follow these steps:

  1. In the search field, type “Upload.”
  2. Select “Send documents” and follow the prompts.

On the USAA Mobile App

To upload your dispute form and documents on our mobile app, follow these steps:

  1. For iPhone, tap the circle in the upper left-hand corner with your initials. For Android, go to “Inbox.”
  2. Select “Send documents to USAA” and tap “Upload new documents” for iPhone or “Upload other documents” for Android.
  3. Follow the instructions to provide the documents.

By mail

How we handle your dispute

We'll investigate your dispute and provide a response within 30 days. Our response won't include documents from the investigation.

What happens next

If we find something wrong, we'll send a correction to the consumer reporting agencies. They usually update reports within 60 days.

How you'll get the results of your dispute

We'll send our response online or by mail. When available, we'll use your chosen member communication preferences. You can change your preferences from your account profile.

If you get your documents online, you may get a text or an email from us telling you that you have a new document available.

What hard and soft inquiries mean on your consumer report

Hard inquiries

A hard inquiry happens when you apply for credit cards, loans or other types of credit.

Potential lenders examine your credit report and use the information in their decision to approve your application.

Soft inquiries

A soft inquiry usually happens when your bank or insurance company checks your credit for a promotional offer, like when you're preselected for a credit card.

It doesn't affect your credit score and can't be removed from your report.

  • Directly through us

What kind of things can I dispute?

You can dispute several things on your consumer report, including but not limited to:

  • Accounts you don't recognize or control.
  • Negative or overdrawn balances that were paid or settled in full.
  • Fraud or identity theft.

How to file a dispute through a consumer reporting agency

You can file a dispute by calling the consumer reporting agency we report to:

After they investigate your dispute, they'll contact you with the results.
