How to complete a title and registration application

Bought a car from a dealership?

If you purchase a car from a dealership in the state you live in, the dealership should file an application with that state's titling agency to transfer the title to your name.

Bought a car from a private seller?

If you purchase from an individual who has a clear title, you need to get the signed title from the seller. Then file the application with your state's titling agency to:

  • Pay the tax, title and licensing fees.
  • Transfer the title into your name.
  • Add USAA as a lienholder.

Check if your state has more title requirements.

If you complete the title work in one of the following states, bring a copy of the Note, Disclosure and Security Agreement with borrowers’ signatures to the appropriate state titling agency:

  • Arkansas

  • Colorado

  • District of Columbia

  • Guam

  • Louisiana

  • Nebraska

  • Nevada

  • Puerto Rico

  • South Dakota

  • Tennessee

  • Virgin Islands

  • Wyoming

Receiving your title after paying off your loan

After we receive and process your final payment, we'll release your title, depending on the payoff method, state law requirements and state motor vehicle department procedures.

The title release process time depends on if you have a paper, electronic or customer-holding paper title. If you're not sure which category applies to you, contact your state titling agency.

How to get a title replacement or copy

If your loan has been paid in full and you need a replacement title, you may need a document called the release of lien.

You'll need to provide the following information for it:

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Vehicle year, make and model
  • Loan number

In most cases, your state will ask you for a release of lien. This document provides proof that we no longer have interest in your vehicle.

How to transfer your title if you move

You should always notify us about changes to your address or any other contact information. Update your contact information on usaa.com under My Profile.

If you move to a new state, contact your new state's titling agency to confirm what documents you may need. Then follow these steps.

  • If they need the original title, ask your new state’s titling agency to email a request for the title to usaamail@vintek.com. Or have them fax a request to 484-895-3496.
  • After we receive the fax, we’ll release your title to the state's titling agency for processing.
  • If they need a copy of the title, contact one of our title specialists at 800-531-USAA (8722).

What you need if you plan to ship your car overseas

U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires a letter from the lienholder authorizing the car’s transportation.

Ask the shipping company if the letter needs to be signed or notarized. Also check if they need copies of both sides of the title.

To request your letter, call one of our title specialists at 800-531-USAA (8722).

How long does it take to process the letter?

It depends on what we get from the state for your title and what the shipping company needs.

We won’t process the letter if your loan payment is more than 30 days overdue. We also won’t send it to you if you're shipping the car to an Office of Foreign Asset Control prohibited country, such as Cuba or North Korea.
