What’s jewelry insurance?

Jewelry insurance is part of what we call VPP InsuranceValuable Personal Property Insurance. You might also know it as engagement ring insurance.

It helps protect your jewelry from accidents like drops, breaks and loss. Plus, there's no deductible.

What does jewelry insurance cover?

You can insure many types of jewelry, such as:

  • Engagement rings
  • Rings and earrings
  • Necklaces and bracelets
  • Watches, including smartwatches
  • Heirloom jewelry

Examples of claims covered by jewelry insurance‍ ‍

Jewelry insurance could pay to repair or replace your covered items. Here are some examples of claims covered:

Drops and breaks

You accidentally drop your smartwatch, and the screen cracks.

Lost and misplaced jewelry

You get home and realize an earring fell out at the park.

Theft

Someone steals your bracelet out of your gym bag.

Fire

An apartment fire destroys your pearl necklace.

Weather-related events

A storm causes a hole in your roof and rain ruins your watch collection.

Choose a policy that fits your needs.

To help you get the right coverage, you can tailor your VPP policy based on the value of your jewelry.

Blanket Policy

This covers any item up to $2,500 or any collection up to $10,000. A blanket policy is easy to get because you don't have to describe your jewelry or provide an appraisal up front.‍ ‍

Keep in mind that if you have a piece of jewelry that's valued over $2,500, a blanket policy won't have enough coverage.

Scheduled Policy

This is for an item valued over $2,500 or a collection valued over $10,000. If you have an expensive piece of jewelry, such as an engagement ring, a scheduled policy helps make sure you have enough coverage.

To get this policy, you'll need to describe each piece of jewelry. Depending on the value, you may also need an appraisal.

Is an appraisal required to get a policy?

To get a blanket policy, you don't have to provide appraisals up front. For a scheduled policy, you may need appraisals depending on the value of your items. But most policies don't require them.

We recommend getting appraisals on all your jewelry, whether or not it's required by the policy. If you report a claim on either type of VPP policy, you'll need to provide proof of ownership and value.

How much does jewelry insurance cost?

It depends on your items, their value and how much coverage you get.

Our VPP rates start as low as $2 a month. Plus, we offer savings on auto, homeowners and renters insurance when members bundle their policies with VPP insurance.‍ ‍

Is jewelry insurance worth it?

If you know you'd replace your jewelry if it's lost, stolen or damaged, a VPP policy may be a smart move. An engagement ring is one of the most popular reasons to get a VPP policy.

This policy doesn't have a deductible and is inexpensive compared to the cost of replacing a treasured piece of jewelry.

  • Silverware, furs, stamps and coins

Jewelry insurance FAQ

Most homeowners and renters policies cover jewelry, but there are often limitations.

You may have to pay a deductible as part of your homeowners policy or renters policy. For example: If you have a $2,000 ring and a $3,000 homeowners deductible, you'd have to pay out of pocket to have it repaired or replaced. With a VPP policy, there's no deductible.

A VPP policy may help cover your jewelry if you accidentally drop it, break it or lose it. A homeowners or renters policy won't.

A homeowners or renters policy may help cover theft of jewelry up to a limit, which may be less than a high-value item or collection. With a VPP policy, you can get theft coverage for an item or collection up to the value you specify.

If you file a homeowners or renters insurance claim for your jewelry, it could cause your rates to increase when your policy renews. If you file a VPP claim, it won’t affect the rates on your homeowners or renters policy.‍ ‍

Replacement cost is the value to replace the item you lost with another item of like kind and quality.

We determine the amount we’ll pay when you file a claim, up to your policy limit. Some exceptions or conditions may apply. Check your policy for details.

You may need an appraisal, depending on the type of Valuable Personal Property (VPP) policy you choose and the value of your jewelry.

For a scheduled VPP policy, you’ll need to provide basic descriptions of your jewelry. Depending on its value, you may also need to provide an appraisal completed within the last five years.

If an appraisal is required, it must:

  • Be completed within the last five years
  • Include a physical inspection of the jewelry (virtual or online appraisals aren’t accepted)
  • Include:
    • Date of the appraisal
    • Appraiser’s contact information
    • A detailed description of the jewelry and its appraised value

Even if your policy doesn’t require an appraisal, we recommend updating your appraisal every five years to help ensure you have enough coverage. The value of jewelry can change over time, so keeping your appraisal current can help protect your investment.

If you file a claim for jewelry covered under a VPP policy, you’ll need to provide proof of ownership and value.

Here are some examples of items that aren’t included in a jewelry policy:

  • Sunglasses and eyeglasses
  • Clothing and footwear
  • Handbags and purses
  • Hearing aids
  • Smart jewelry and accessories

Have more peace of mind for your most valued pieces.
