What's electric bike insurance?

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are covered by bicycle insurance. It helps protect cyclists and their e-bikes, which is valuable if you’re looking to ride farther, faster and longer.

You can customize your policy, whether you ride for transportation or recreation. It can include coverage for things like crash damage and injuries.

How are e-bikes different?

E-bikes look like standard bicycles, but they have a battery and an electric motor to assist pedaling or a throttle. Some have display screens.

If you have an electric bike and a standard bicycle, one Markel policy could cover them both.

What types of electric bikes are covered?

E-bike motors must be no more than 750 watts. Popular brands include Trek, Pedego Electric Bikes and Giant.

Class 1

The motor helps the rider pedal up to 20 mph.

Class 2

The throttle helps the rider go up to 20 mph without pedaling.

Class 3

The motor helps the rider pedal up to 28 mph.

Coverage options for many situations

Most Markel coverages are optional, and e-bikes have the same options as standard bicycles. Mix and match the coverage you want to get the policy you need. You pick the value limit of your bike, and deductibles range from $200 to $500.

A Markel policy could cover the following and more:

  • Crash damage
  • Claims filed against you
  • Damages to your bike
  • Injuries while riding
  • Roadside assistance
  • Theft and vandalism

Do I need e-bike insurance?

Homeowners and renters policies may not cover electric bikes with a motor. Since e-bikes help you ride faster, your risk could also be higher. A separate e-bike policy can help give you needed protection, including liability and medical coverage.

Electric bike insurance FAQ

Policies start at $100 a year. The coverages you select, the value of your bike and how you ride are some of the factors that determine the cost of a bicycle insurance policy.

You won’t pay a higher rate just because you have an e-bike, but if you have a covered accident, the cost of damages could be higher.

Motorcycle insurance typically won't cover an electric bike. E-bikes are built more like a standard bicycle and often can be ridden with no assistance from the motor.

If you give someone permission to use your insured bike, your coverage may apply to them.
