What's personal property insurance for military service academy students? See note 1
It’s a special type of policy you can get through USAA Renters Insurance. It differs from a traditional renters policy because it offers a lower deductible and tailored coverage for things like your military class ring and academy-issued laptop.
Our policy can also provide liability coverage. This helps protect you financially if you're held responsible for harm to another person or their things.
Who’s eligible?
We offer coverage to academy appointees and cadets or midshipmen who go to these schools:
- U.S. Air Force Academy
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy
- U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
- U.S. Military Academy at West Point
- U.S. Naval Academy
- Service academy preparatory schools

Service academy personal property insurance FAQ
It depends on how much your stuff is worth. To get an idea of what coverage you need, make a list of your things and estimate their value. Then, look at the total cost you might have to pay to repair or replace them. You can also increase your coverage limit if you think you need more protection.
You can also get a personal property policy through USAA Renters Insurance if you’re a senior military college cadet.
- Your net worth, which is the value of your assets minus any debts you owe.
- Your risk of being held financially responsible for injury or damages.
It could be. Your parents can check their homeowners policy to see if you have coverage when away from home or at the academy. One thing to think about — deductibles are generally higher on a homeowners policy than on service academy renters policies.
Let's say a homeowners policy has a $2,000 deductible and your $750 guitar is stolen. You won't be paid for the theft of your guitar because the guitar's value is less than the policy's deductible.
And once you start your military career, a big part of your financial journey can be a renters policy. Learn more about renters insurance for military members.
