How does condo insurance work with a condo association policy?

The two policies work together. Our policy can help cover parts of your unit that your condo association’s master insurance policy doesn’t.

For example, the master policy could cover exterior walls of the unit. But you need condo insurance to cover your interior walls and damage to your kitchen and other rooms.

You can also get protection for your things and liability coverage with condo insurance.

Coverage to help protect your property‍ ‍ See note 1

Personal property

This includes the stuff you own like your furniture, jewelry, clothing, appliances and electronics. Even when you travel or put things in storage, your stuff is covered.

Building items

This helps cover your unit’s interior. If you have custom or upgraded features like flooring, plumbing, cabinets and countertops, they’re covered, too.

Home sharing‍ ‍ See note 2

Coverage for the things you own can extend to home sharing, exchange programs and short-term rentals. If you rent your condo to long-term tenants, you may need USAA Rental Property Insurance, also known as landlord insurance.

Coverage to help protect your finances‍ ‍ See note 1

Condo coverage helps protect you financially if you face a lawsuit or other unexpected expense following a covered loss.

Claims against you

If you're at fault for someone's injury or damage to their property, personal liability coverage may help protect you and cover your legal costs up to your policy’s limits.

Damage to shared property

The cost to repair damage to common areas is shared by all condo unit owners. This coverage could help pay unexpected condo association assessments up to $50,000.

Temporary living expenses

If a covered event leaves your home unlivable, this can help reimburse you for things like hotel stays or apartment rent, food, laundry, moving and pet boarding. Learn more about loss of use coverage.

Identity theft‍ ‍ See note 3

Our standard policy includes up to $5,000 of identity theft coverage, which can help pay for services you may need to recover your identity.

Medical payments to others

Costs for things like X-rays or ER visits for people injured on your property can add up. This may help cover medical payments for their injuries no matter who's at fault, including some accidents that happen away from your property.

Repair or replace old stuff at today’s cost.

Your policy comes with replacement cost coverage.‍ ‍ See note 4

That means, for example, if your old TV has covered damage, your policy can pay the value of what a comparable make and model would go for today. You just pay your deductible.

Special coverage for military

Active-duty and active Reserve members won't pay a deductible on a covered loss for personally owned military gear and clothing. This can include uniforms, insignia, flight cases, headsets and body armor.‍ ‍ See note 5

Optional coverages to consider

Electronics

If you need protection for common accidents like drops and spills, add electronics coverage. So if you accidentally damage or lose your laptop, we'll help pay to fix or replace it up to your coverage limit.‍ ‍ See note 6

Water backup

This covers damage caused by water or sewage that backs up through the plumbing from outside the unit. It also covers damage from water that overflows from a sump pump or sump well designed to drain water from the interior foundation.

Earthquake

This provides coverage for your home and its contents if they’re damaged by an earthquake, shock waves or tremors.‍ ‍ See note 7

Personal injury

If you’re accused of damaging someone’s reputation with libel, slander, defamation of character or other harmful actions, personal injury protection can help.

Policies that go beyond condo insurance

Valuable Personal Property insurance

Also known as VPP, this policy gives you extra coverage for things like jewelry, guns and more. And there's no deductible.

Flood insurance

Just like homeowners insurance, condo policies don’t cover floods. We offer coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and the USAA Insurance Agency can help you get coverage from a private insurer.

Umbrella insurance

This policy may pick up where your condo liability coverage leaves off. It helps you pay for the rest of a claim that exceeds its limits.
