What You Need to Know

Even the smartest smartphone is susceptible to attack. Securing your mobile devices can reduce the likelihood of access to your personal and financial information, photos, texts and email if your device is lost or stolen.

Jailbroken and Rooted Devices

Avoid putting your device at risk. "Rooting" (for AndroidSee noteTM) and "jailbreaking" (for AppleSee note®), is getting system level access and removes software restrictions which expose your information to untrusted software.

USAA Mobile App won't run on jailbroken or rooted devices to ensure security of your financial transactions and data.

Possible Reasons your device may appear as Rooted or Jailbroken?

  • Your device has intentionally been rooted or jailbroken.
  • You may have an installed application that hides rooted status or requires root access.

What You Need to Do

  • Lock your mobile device screen by enabling its passcode feature.
  • Enable remote wipe and location features to help ensure that your personal information is protected if your device is lost or stolen.
  • Set up biometrics on your mobile device to add an extra layer of security when logging on to the USAA Mobile App.
  • Set up Quick Logon to access your accounts using the USAA Mobile App. This feature uses SymantecSee note® Validation and ID technology in combination with your PIN for additional security.
  • Keep your operating system and applications up to date. Normally your device's application store will keep you aware of updates that often include security patches.

Additional Protection to Consider

  • Keep it safe. Maintaining physical control of your device is the first way to prevent abuse.
  • Keep it updated. Set your device to install app and system updates automatically if possible. These updates often include security fixes.
  • Use your security features. Use a passcode or PIN to help protect your device. Enable remote wipe and location features to help ensure that your personal information is protected if your device is lost or stolen.
  • Beware of malicious applications. Download apps only from trusted sources like the AppleSee note® App Store or GoogleSee note® Play.
  • Avoid links from unknown sources. Don't use a link from sources you don't trust, including emails and social media posts. Malicious links could direct you to websites or install applications that compromise your device.
  • Use trusted networks. Connecting your device to unknown wireless networks can expose your data. Avoid accessing sensitive information, like banking, if using an unsecured or unknown network. If possible, switch to your cellular data plan for banking and then back to wireless when complete.
  • Turn off unnecessary services. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, location apps, NFC (near field communication) apps and other connection abilities can be disabled to protect your device when you're not using them.
  • Encrypt your Data. If your mobile device supports it, use encryption to help protect sensitive information.
  • Be Cautious of Granting Elevated Privileges. When installing applications or external accessories, always inspect the permissions. They will tell you what access the apps/accessories need to function and will also tell you if the application is asking for more permissions than needed.
  • Install and use anti-virus software and browser protection tools. Some devices, especially those running Android, support the use of anti-virus software that helps prevent bad applications from attacking your device. Browser protection products provide an additional layer of security to warn you about malicious websites. You can learn more about capabilities offered by individual mobile anti-virus vendors by visiting their websites.
