What’s open enrollment?
It’s the period each year when you can enroll in an individual or family health insurance plan. You can also change your existing coverage.
Some states may extend their enrollment period. Be sure to check the rules for your state.

Health insurance open enrollment FAQ
To apply, you’ll need to have personal information for your household:
- Social Security numbers
- Employer details
- Household income
- How you file your taxes
You should also start thinking about how much you spend each month on health insurance premiums and the type of coverage you need.
Usually when you turn 26, your coverage ends. If you can, find out if your parent’s plan is a Marketplace plan or a job-based plan before you turn 26 so you understand your options.

Most states offer a Special Enrollment Period. That means you can buy a health plan if you have a qualifying life event. A qualifying life event could be changing or losing your job, losing your current health coverage, moving to a new ZIP code, having or adopting a child, or becoming married, divorced or separated.
You usually get 60 days before or after the qualifying life event to enroll in a plan.
