What’s flood insurance?

Protection from floodwaters

Rising water from outside can cause damage to your home.

Coverage to repair and replace

A flood policy can help cover the structure of your home and your belongings.

More than a property policy

Most homeowners and rental policies don’t cover water damage from a natural disaster.

What types of floods does it cover?‍ ‍ See note 1

In the past 5 years, floods have affected all 50 states.‍ ‍ See note 2 Certain situations can cause flooding in any area. Here are some examples.

Melting snow and ice

Live in an area with snowy winters? Come spring, that snow can turn into water that can flood parts of your home.

Heavy rain after a drought

Land that's been dry for a long time often can’t handle heavy rains. When the soil doesn't absorb water, it doesn't take much rain to cause flash floods.

Tropical storms or hurricanes

Massive storms are normal for coastal areas. Even if you live inland, a stalled storm can flood the oversaturated ground.

Effects of land development

As land gets built up, there's less open soil to soak up rainwater. This can redirect water drainage, and your neighborhood could be in its new path.

Landscape changes from wildfires

Wildfires destroy plants and trees that reduce water runoff. Without them, the ground can’t absorb water, which can cause flash floods and mudflows.

Different insurers have different coverage, so make sure you check your policy. You'll want to know what's covered.

But here's a little twist for you: When it rains, it also can flood – wherever you live. It's time to accept the following fact before it's too late: every home is at risk of flooding.

Even if your house is in a “low-risk” flood zone, “low-risk” does NOT mean “no-risk.”

How much is flood insurance?

There are a few things that could affect the cost of flood insurance. It can also depend on which state you live in.

Deductible

Higher deductibles can lower your premium. Just keep in mind that you’ll need enough funds in the bank to pay your deductible if you make a claim.

Coverage

It only takes an inch of water to cause thousands of dollars in damage. Make sure you have enough coverage to make repairs or rebuild your home.

Lender requirements

Depending on where you live, your mortgage company might require you to get flood coverage. They may also add your premium to your mortgage payments.

Flood insurance FAQ

Flood damage is caused by rising water, or floodwater, from outside your property.

Water damage could be from a burst pipe or rainwater coming in through a hole in the roof. It’s damage that’s not related to outside floodwaters.

Most homeowners policies don’t include flood coverage. You’ll have to separately purchase flood insurance for your home.

While it’s not required coverage, floods happen, so it’s a good idea to protect your stuff. Flood coverage usually doesn't come standard with renters insurance, but it’s included with a USAA Renters Insurance policy. USAA Renters Insurance policy
