Steps to Homeownership

Buying a house is an exciting time. We'll be here to guide you through each step.

  • Step 1: Get PreapprovedSee note3

Make the buying process easier when you know what you can spend.

It only takes a few minutes to get preapproved online.

    • Tell us a little about your finances and where you want to move.
    • We'll check your credit to reduce the chance of getting denied later.
    • Get a shopping letter to help you negotiate better with sellers.
  • Step 2: Get a Real Estate Agent

Let our dedicated and experienced real estate team work for you.

A real estate agent can provide valuable information and help you focus on homes that meet your needs and budget. Work with an experienced agent through the USAA Real Estate Rewards Network and see if you are eligible for a $350 to $24,000 reward after closing, based on the sales price of your home. The average reward is $1,278See note4 — more if you both buy and sell.

  • Step 3: Complete Your Mortgage Application

Your USAA loan officer makes the application process easier.

Once you find a home, your loan officer will help you complete the mortgage application. You'll need to provide the documentation listed below:

    • Income statements, such as pay stubs or award letters.
    • Current bank statements
    • Other supporting documents as needed. We'll walk you through it.
  • Step 4: Almost There!

We'll let you know if more information is needed.

During the application review, we'll check to make sure that the following items are correct.:

    • We have all the required documents.
    • Your supporting documents match the application.
    • The title is clear.

We'll provide status updates and let you know if we need anything more from you. During this time, keep your documents on hand in case you need to reference them again.

  • Step 5: Get Your Keys

    Congratulations on your new home!

When all the paperwork is approved, you'll be ready to close. To get the keys, you'll need the items listed below:

    • Your ID — a driver's license, passport or military ID
    • A cashier's check or wire transfer to cover your closing costs and down payment
